Where it all went wrong
Dear Mr. President,
You have been the President since I was 12 years old. I was too young to remember the policies of your father. I was still very young to understand what went on with the Clinton administration. I remember vividly the day of September 11th. I remember seeing the news reels all day long after I was let out of school and I remember vividly you addressing our country that evening with what I believe to be your best speech. It instilled in me the confidence and security that had been stripped away that morning. You promised justice would be brought to those responsible. Somewhere in your quest for that you lost your way. We fought in Afghanistan and then in what I can only guess was an act of redemption for the first Gulf War's inability to end Saddam's reign, you led us into my generation's Vietnam.
You failed your own citizens at home during Hurricane Katrina, you've let innocent American soldiers die for reasons that were conveyed to the public untruthfully, you have started our country on a warpath against an enemy with no face, you have made one of the shadiest claims for executive privilige since the Nixon administration, and worst of all you have left a large number of Americans believing their government cannot be trusted through your utter disregard for the Constitution you swore to protect.
I am not sorry to see you go, Mr. President. I think you meant well and probably believe that what you did was the right thing, and on the other hand I would hope there are some things you regret. You have seen a large range in your approval ratings from the 90s after your handling of September 11th to the mid 20s as you exited. I will always remember and say that I was proud to call you my President after that fateful day. However, somewhere along the way things changed and you were no longer trying to find justice for that day, you used that day as an excuse to do whatever you wanted.
I hope someday you will vocalize the things you specifically see as being wrong with your Presidency aside from the PR nightmare that was the "Mission Accomplished" banner because there's more to be accountable for. Right now I cannot forgive some of the things you have done in your time as President but I hope some day I will.
