Jiffy Peat Pellets

I've always liked Jiffy pellets for starting seeds indoors, especially when I have a tight space and want to grow a bunch in one area without making a big mess in my kitchen. I always thought it was a win-win scenario, since the pellets just mix in with your soil and the netting dissolves over time, but it turns out that the netting doesn't dissolve as quickly as one might hope for.

How to Pet a Cat

Have you heard that there is a right way--and a wrong way--to pet a cat? According to scientists, there are many signs that indicate whether or not a cat wants to be pet or not, and following your cat's lead is the best way to pet him or her. This seems like common sense to me; everyone I know who has cats knows exactly where their cats enjoy being stroked and they'll even tell guests to avoid certain spots that cats dislike.

N.E.W.T.S. Magical Read-A-Thon

While I had every intention of joining the NEWTS Magical Read-a-Thon, August ended up being much busier than I expected and I totally missed it. I know there are four days left, and I could probably cram the books I read for my library reading club together with a couple of short novels, but I think I'll just make plans for next August, which we plan on taking off from many of the things we normally do.

How Poetry Can Change The World

Joy Harjo says that there's something about poetry that is unique and special in a way we may not even realize. The hate speech and violence seem to be at an all-time modern high, not only in the United States but in many countries around the world where facism seems to be on the rise. Harjo, the first Native American woman poet laureate, says that she started writing because she knew that not only she needed to be heard, but the voices of native women in general needed to be, too.

Radioactive Waste 405 - U.S. Converting Old Weapons Complexes Into Wildlife Refuges - Part 3 of 3 Parts

Part 3 of 3 Parts (Please read Parts 1 and 2 first)
Jeff Edison is a former health official from Colorado who was involved in the cleanup. He said, “So there's a huge downside to converting it into a wildlife refuge, because it allows residual contamination to remain in place. Theoretically, if the Earth still exists in the year 3000, they'll still be monitoring groundwater at the arsenal,”

Care Packages For College Students

When it comes to care packages, DIY is always best, don't you think? You can customize, exclude things that the recipient wouldn't like from a pre-packaged box and include special, unique items just for that person. But sometimes you can't create one based on time, or a subscription service that would really fit the person in mind is just easier and cheaper, especially with shipping.
